Finnish list of health claims sent to the Commission

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
Publication date 8.2.2008 9.05
Press release -

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has delivered a list of health claims used on the Finnish food market to the European Commission. The inclusion of a certain claim on the list does not mean that the officials would have authorised its use in food marketing. The Commission will publish a joint EU list of health claims approved for use in the marketing of foodstuffs by 31 January 2010.

According to the Regulation on nutrition and health claims made on foods, the Member States were to deliver to the Commission by 31 January 2008 a list of health claims describing or referring to

a) the role of nutrient or other substance in growth, development and the functions of the body, or
b) psychological and behavioural functions, or
c) slimming or weight control or a reduction in the sense of hunger or an increase in the sense of satiety or a reduction of the available energy for the diet.

The list delivered to the Commission was drawn up on the basis of information received from the operators in the food sector. The information is based on a survey conducted by the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira, with subsequent additions. Preliminary comments of some national experts have been attached to the list. Before the final publication of the list, the European Food Safety Authority EFSA will carry out a scientific evaluation of the health claims.

The Finnish authorities have also sent to the Commission a separate list of health claims which they received only in English. These claims have not been examined by the authorities or national experts.
