Mapping and maps

Public mapping and maintaining the national topographic data system form the core of the national positioning system.

Public mapping and topographic data system

The basic objective of public mapping is to provide, maintain and distribute reliable and consistent basic topographic data that can be used for multiple purposes and, based on the data, maps on the features and characteristics of the built and natural environment covering the whole country.

The systems, data sets and services maintained in connection with mapping form the national topographic data system (MTJ), which is one of the society’s basic data reserves. The key components of the system include the national coordinate and height systems, the topographic database, general map products, electronic information services and support services for users. The topographic data system is maintained by the National Land Survey of Finland.
