Contaminants

Contaminants are substances that have not been intentionally added to food. These substances may be present in food as a result of the various stages of its primary and industrial production, processing, preparation, handling, packaging, transportation or storage. They may also end up in foodstuffs due to environmental contamination. Extraneous matter, such as insect fragments and animal hair, are not included in the definition.

For more information on contaminants, please visit the website of the Finnish Food Authority.

Legislation on contaminants in food (in Finnish. The legislation can be found in English in the Eurlex service, which can be accessed by hyperlinks on the list.)
