River Tenojoki fishing regulations for non-salmon fishing adopted
The amendments to the fishing regulations in the River Tenojoki for summer 2022, agreed with Norway, were confirmed by a Government decree. The amended regulations apply to fishing for species other than salmon. The legislative proposal to ban salmon fishing is being discussed by Parliament. The Government decree entered into force on 6 May 2022.
Since a dramatic decline in the salmon populations necessitate a ban on fishing for salmon, fishing for other species will be allowed with slightly less strict regulations compared to last year.
Holders of a grayling permit for tourists may fish from the shore with light fly fishing gear and a 6-weight single-hand fly fishing rod, which is the most commonly used type of fly fishing rod. These permits will be available between 15 June and 31 July. Holders of a permit for local fishers may fish other species than salmon with a rod even from a boat. All rod fishing is banned at night from 23.00 to 8.00 in June and July and from 19.00 to 8.00 in August. As before, there are restrictions on rod fishing close to river mouths and in the protection zones established in the River Tenojoki Ylä- and Alaköngäs areas to reduce salmon bycatch.
A slightly larger mesh size is allowed in net fishing for other species than salmon and the net-fishing area for other species will be larger in August. What is also noteworthy is that trout fishing is allowed under regulations on fishing for species other than salmon.
The Government decree was published in the Statute Book of Finland (number 314/2022) and in the Finnish Treaty Series (number 29/2022) on 6 May 2022.
