Pekka Pesonen appointed Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

Today, on 25 January 2024, the Government has appointed M.Sc. (agriculture and forestry) Pekka Pesonen to the post of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for the period from 1 February 2024 to 31 January 2029. The term of the current Permanent Secretary Jaana Husu-Kallio ends on 31 January 2024.
Construction of new experimental cowshed of Natural Resources Institute Finland in Jokioinen progresses

The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) will replace the experimental cowshed in Minkiö, Jokioinen with a new one. The planning of the project and competitive tendering and planning the implementation of the construction work will be carried out during 2024. The construction of the new cowshed will take place in 2025 and the aim is to take it into use by the end of the year.

The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council discussed international trade in agricultural products, the organisation of the strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture, a proposal for a regulation on a forest monitoring framework and, on Finland’s initiative, large carnivore matters.

The first year of the EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP) 2023–2027 is coming to an end. In Finland the implementation has started very well, despite the numerous challenges in the environment where we operate today. The national policy outlines are specified in the CAP Strategic Plan, which will have significant impacts on agriculture and on the vitality of the rural areas.

Customs enhances the combat against African swine fever by training a new customs dog to detect foodstuffs of animal origin at Helsinki Airport. The new food detector dog will be placed at Helsinki Airport, because the African swine fever had spread to Asia in the last years and because a great number of passengers travel from Asia to Finland.
