Compensation for environmental impacts

Compensation for environmental impacts is a flexibility mechanism that helps to reconcile the benefits of business development and the environment. However, the avoidance, reduction and restoration of environmental damage should be of primary importance. Compensation does not justify environmental degradation.

Compensation is a way to increase the sustainability of business activities and to create new opportunities for business and nature conservation. Possible areas of application include ecosystem services, nutrients, climate and biodiversity.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry launched a project to develop compensation mechanisms in spring 2017. A preliminary study on the topic has already been carried out.
