EU adaptation work

The European Commission adopted the new EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in February 2021. The strategy sets out how the EU will prepare for climate change and adapt to it, and how the EU will become climate resilient by 2050.

The Strategy has four principle objectives

  1. Smarter adaptation: improving knowledge and managing uncertainty
  2. More systemic adaptation: support policy development at all levels and sectors
  3. Faster adaptation: Speeding up adaptation across the board
  4. Increasing support for international action

The first European Climate Law was adopted in summer 2021 as part of the European Green Deal. The European Climate Law includes requirements concerning the national adaptation plans as well.

The EU provides information and statistical data on climate change, vulnerability and adaptation on the Climate-ADAPT website.
