Sectoral research institutes

In its administrative branch, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry steers two research institutes: the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS / Finnish Geospatial Research Institute, FGI). The Finnish Food Authority also participates in research activities in the sector. The aim of performance-based guidance is to ensure that the activities of the research institutes support the branch of administration in achieving the targets set in the State budget (i.e. societal impact, operational efficiency and management of resources). The research institutes’ performance agreements are multiannual (1+4 years) and focus on strategic targets.

In activities concerning the management and utilisation of water resources, the Ministry also steers the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) operating under the Ministry of the Environment.
