Opportunities to recycle nutrients can be found almost anywhere - from field margins to pipelines of wastewater purification plants. Innovations are being created and Finland is firmly committed to making progress as a model country in nutrient recycling.

Circular economy and nutrient recycling is one of the key projects in the Strategic Programme of the Finnish Government 2015-2018. The aim is to develop new biomass processing technologies and logistics and service models for nutrient recycling, and to enhance the production of recycled fertilisers and processing of high-value products from different types of biomass. The Government is launching a three-year experimental and piloting programme for nutrient recycling with a total funding of 12.4 million euros.

The objective of the seminar was to introduce initiatives that enhance the recycling of nutrients contained in manure and wastewater sludge. The seminar gave an overview of political and administrative measures, as well as presented success stories in nutrient recycling from various parts of Europe. It brought together businesses, research, administration and NGOs to finding new solutions to nutrient recycling.

The seminar was organised by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Employment and the Economy, Natural Resources Institute Finland, Rural Network Support Unit of Finland, EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform.
