The ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki entered into force on 10 June 2022, when the President of the Republic approved the act concerning the ban. According to the act, salmon is fully protected and fishing gear intended for salmon fishing is prohibited until the end of the year.

The dates for the approval of the ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki have now been set. The second reading in Parliament is on Tuesday 7 June and, if the bill is passed, the President of the Republic will approve the Act on Friday 10 June. The ban on salmon fishing would enter into force immediately.

Parliament adopted the proposal for the act on a temporary ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki in the second reading on 31 May. In the Government proposal given in April it was assumed that the act could enter into force on 1 June. Now it seems, however, that the act will not enter into force until on 7 June.

However, the updated guidelines of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare on hygiene related to COVID-19 must be complied with.

The UN Food Systems Summit will be held at the level of heads of state or government in connection with the UN General Assembly in September. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä and Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari represented Finland at the ministerial level Pre-Summit in Rome on 26–28 July.
