Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government was appointed on 20.6.2023. Sari Essayah will serve as Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in the new Government.


Leena Räsänen appointed Director General of the Finnish Food Authority

The Government has appointed Leena Räsänen, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, as Director General of the Finnish Food Authority from 8 October 2023 to 7 October 2028. The current Director General Antti-Jussi Oikarinen will retire. A total of 16 persons applied for the post by the deadline of 24 July 2023.

Cuisine takes Finland to world stage

The Finnish Chef Association has published Finnish food recipes (‘Suomiruoka-reseptiikka’) to promote Finland’s country branding and food exports. The recipes will serve Finnish embassies and missions around the world and those organising international meetings and events in Finland. When ready, the material will be freely available to everyone. The material was produced under an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Johanna Buchert to continue as President of Natural Resources Institute Finland

The Government has appointed Johanna Buchert, Doctor of Technology, to continue as President and CEO of the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) for the term 10 September 2023 – 9 September 2028. Buchert has served as President of the Institute since 2018. A total of 12 persons applied for the post by the deadline of 24 July 2023.

EU celebrates Organic Day for second time

The EU Member States will celebrate the European Organic Day in various ways around the autumn equinox. The staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will enjoy an organic breakfast on 25 September, and will invite the staff of the European Commission Representation in Finland and representatives of the National Nutrition Council, ProLuomu and Finnish Organic Association to join them.

Government proposal to ban salmon fishing in River Tenojoki to Parliament

The government proposal to ban salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki (Tana) in 2023 was submitted to Parliament at the government plenary session on Thursday 17 November 2022. Salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki is to be prohibited in order to enable the recovery of the salmon stocks.
