Project description
Duration: 2023-2025
With more precise forest management and harvesting and more efficient monitoring, we can
enhance the protection of biodiversity, the wood production capacity and carbon sequestration of
forests, and increase the resistance and resilience of forests in a changing climate. So far, the
potential of precision forestry has only been utilized to a small extent. The biggest opportunities
are related to the full utilization of spatial information in forest use planning and operations, as
well as in the verification of actions.
The aim of this project is to develop, pilot and make available methods of verification of
sustainability and precision forestry to support both the monitoring and the practical operations
carried out in the forests. The user base of the methods to be developed and the beneficiaries of
the project primarily consist of site planners, logging machine drivers and loggers, but landowners
also benefit from the project's outputs. Methods are developed for advance planning of
operations, monitoring and guidance during work, and for more precise verification of the
completed operation. These focus on the topics of nature management, forest management and
harvesting, as well as the management of forest damage risks. The assumption is that there is a
demand for the methods and that the importance of authentication in particular will increase
considerably in the near future.
